Willie McKelvey, St. Stephens

Funeral services for Brother Willie “Dooney” McKelvey, Jr., conducted by Pastor Emmie Grant and Bishop Jeremiah Ravenell, were held Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Canaan Pentecostal Church. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Tri-Churches Cemetery of St. Stephen. Mr. Kelvey died Saturday, November 2, 2013. He was born December 18, 1946, the son of the late Catherine Brown and Willie McKelvey, Sr. of St. Stephen. He was educated in Berkeley County. He left South Carolina to travel and work with Thomas Roofing Company, then he begin working with Vaughn’s Tobacco Company. Finally he worked with the Janitorial Company at IBM. He was a member of Canaan Pentecostal Church, where he served on the trustee board, sang on the choir and ushered. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Jean Purnell; two sons, James and Rickie Purnell (Vickie) of Lexington, Kentucky; one daughter, Lanita Purnell of Lexington, Kentucky; two sisters, Elizabeth B. McDaniel of Charleston; and Doretha Reid (Harvey) of Moncks Corner; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
