Virginia Rhem Hinson, 98, widow of Roscoe M. Hinson, died Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Covenant Place of Sumter. Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Williamsburg Cemetery, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Hinson was born December 25, 1914, in Orangeburg, the daughter of the late Laurice F. Rhem and Virginia Seignious Rhem. She was raised on Old Morrisville Plantation in Williamsburg County, attended Winthrop College and graduated from Winyah Business School. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, the SC Society of the Dames of The Court of Honor and The Daughters of the American Colonists. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a Past President of the State PTA. She was an avid golfer, having made a hole-in-one at the age of 77. She won many golf tournaments, including Club Champion at the Kingstree and Litchfield courses, SC Seniors Champion, and the American Golf Association Seniors Champion. A brother, Laurice F. Rhem, Jr., preceded her in death. Survivors are: three children, Virginia “Ginger” H. Joye (Carl Wilbur) and Elizabeth H. “Bette” Miller, both of Kingstree; and Roscoe M. “Rock” Hinson, Jr., (Elizabeth T.) of Georgetown; one sister, Elaine R. Welsh of Columbia; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 411 N. Academy Street, Kingstree, SC 29556 or to a charity of one’s choice.
