Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Ruth “Ruth” Hawkins Nesmith, conducted by the Rev. Winston Boyd, were held Saturday, October 19, 2013, at First Church of Christ of Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at St. John AME Church Cemetery of Trio. Mrs. Nesmith died Tuesday, October 15, 2013. She was born December 14, 1933, the daughter of Alto and Flossie Hawkins. She worked in domestic housekeeping for a number of years and at Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. She was a member of the First Church of Christ. She was married to the late Charles Nesmith. Five siblings, Odia Mae Knight, Mary Ann Hawkins, Willie Hawkins, Alto Hawkins, Jr. and James Hawkins, preceded her in death. Survivors are: one son, Freddie Eaton (Vernell) of Columbia; five stepchildren, Christine Nesmith, Charles Nesmith (Vickie) and Donald Nesmith (Sherry), all of Charlotte, North Carolina; Robert Nesmith and Samantha Thomas both of Andrews; 11 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
