Traffic Safety Checkpoints – The Lane, Greeleyville, and Kingstree Police Departments will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the month of October.

Seniors Patrol - The Kingstree Police Depart-ment is offering a seniors patrol wellness check. Any elderly, ill or bedridden residents of the Town of Kingstree who would like for the police department to contact them on a regular basis should call Chief Robert Ford. Chief Ford can be reached at 355-5435 or come by the police department and leave your name, phone number, and address.

 

Memory Dish - Hospice Care of South Caro-lina's Grief Support Group, known as the "Memory Dish" is held the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Technical Col-lege (Administrative Office Building Conference Room). The Memory Dish is conducted by Chaplain Willis Broughton. The contact number for this group is (843) 213-8507.

Senior Bingo - The senior citizens of Lane invite any senior citizen to join them every first and third Tuesday at Lane Recreation Center on Broomstraw Rd. for “Senior Bingo.”

 

Weight Watchers - Weight Watchers 2012 meetings will be held at the First Baptist Church of Kingstree. Classes are on Thursdays at 5 p.m.

 

Screenings - Williamsburg County School District Office of Special Ser-vices, located at 500 North Academy Street, Kingstree, (843) 355-5533, will hold child find screenings each month.

 

Meeting - The Housing Authority of Kingstree will meet every third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at 1022 Lexington Ave., Kingstree.

 

Parade - The Andrews Veterans Association (AVA) is proud to announce a Veterans Day Parade and service will be held in Andrews on Saturday, November 3, at 1 p.m., with a service to follow at 3 p.m. The parade will be held on Main Street and the service will be held inside the local National Guard Armory. Veterans and military members are most welcome to join the Andrews Veterans Association.

 

Lancing Clinic - Free equestrian lancing clinic, a brief history and demonstrations, will be given. Members of the Cedar Swamp Lancing Association will be on site to demonstrate and assist interested prospective lancers. Mini-Plantation Tours included. Lunch and drinks will be available for purchase. Please join them at Lakewood Plantation in Williamsburg County on October 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Exhibit - “African-Americans on Postage Stamps”this extraordinary exhibition includes the stamps issued by the USPS celebrating the people, events and cultural milestones of African-Americans from October 2 to October 31, Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at C. Williams Rush Gallery Of African-American Arts & Culture, 200 Hampton Avenue, Kingstree.

 

Showcase - The second annual “A Beautiful Black Christmas”Will be held from November 5 to December 31. A showcase of black angels, Santas, nutcrackers, nativity scenes and Christmas trees decorated with black ornaments from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at C. Williams Rush Gallery Of African-American Arts & Culture, 200 Hampton Avenue, Kingstree. Dinner - Vital Aging of Williamsburg County, Inc. presents dinner and an evening with legendary SC State Coach Willie Jefferies on Thursday, October 11. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. at Santee Electric Cooperative, Inc. Conference Center, 424 Sumter Hwy., Kingstree. For ticket information call (843) 354-5496 or go to www. vitalaginginc.org. Festival - The Kingstree/Bi-Lo Pig Pickin’ Festival is scheduled for October 18 to October 20, at the Kingstree Recreation Center. Training - Training and exam for the private pesticide applicator license will be held on Friday, October 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at the Williamsburg County Extension Office, 9 Court House Square, Kingstree. Workshop - Williamsburg County is sponsoring a small business workshop on “The Fundamentals” (success and failure and no grants and limited resources) Thursday, October 25, from 6 p.m. til 9 p.m. in the Alex Chatman Complex Courtroom, 147 W. Main St., Kingstree. Refreshments will be served. Mike Bell of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Florence-Darlington Technical College will be the presenter. Book Presentation - The Friends of Williamsburg County Library will be hosting Sherman Carmichael, on Thursday, October 25 at 6 p.m. Sherman Carmichael is a Johnsonville native, and Williamsburg County Library is pleased to have him return for a presentation of his new book, Legends and Lore of South Carolina.  Sherman researched the stories in this book for over a year. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing. His first book, Forgotten Tales of South Carolina, was published 2011. South Carolina residents know that around every corner there’s another legend. Join them for an evening of thrilling and chilling tales. The public in invited and there is no charge.

 

Voting - The Williamsburg County Voter Registration Office will be open on Saturday, October 6,  from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for anyone who would like to register to vote in the November 6, General Election. You can register to vote by downloading a voter registration form from the South Carolina State Election website at: www.scvotes.org  or you can come by the Williamsburg County Voter Registration Office and complete an application.  At the conclusion of all the processing, you will be sent a voter registration card through the mail. Homecoming Parade - Hemingway High School will host its fifth annual Homecoming Parade; the theme is “Something Good Is Gonna Happen Today!” on October 5, at 4:30 p.m. After the parade, the tailgating will begin on the school grounds of Hemingway High School. Clubs and organizations will be selling refreshments as fundraisers, and music will be provided by the school. Yard Sale - Life Center P.H. Church Women’s Ministries will sponsor a yard sale on Saturday, October 6, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2111 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Hwy. 377, Kingstree.

 

Know the Facts - One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. South Carolina now ranks second in the nation for the number of women murdered by men. Learn the facts on domestic violence and how it effects the community will be held Saturday, October 13, at 12 p.m. at the Lake City Housing Authority, 398 N. Matthews Rd., Lake City. Service - Tidelands Community Hospice will hold its annual Service of Remembrance & Hope, Thursday,  October 11, at 5:30 pm at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church fellowship hall courtyard, 411 N. Academy St. These services are a tribute to the hospice patients who died during the past year, as well as others in the community who have died.

Families and friends of deceased loved ones are invited to join the hospice staff and volunteers in honoring their memory. This event, open to all members of the public, is a celebration of life. The service will last about half an hour. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Casual attire is recommended.

 

Meeting - The Williamsburg Section of The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) will meet Friday, October 5, (instead of Friday, October 12) at 5:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg County Recreation on Thurgood Marshall Blvd. in Kingstree. New members are welcome.

 

Meeting - The regular meeting of The Waccamaw Center for Mental Health Governing Board is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, at 5 p.m. at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health, 164 Waccamaw Medical Park Drive, Conway.

Program - The Williamsburg County School District will submit applications to the SC Department of Education for funding of 21st Century Community Learning Centers programs. The applications will be made available for review upon request.

Meeting - The Williamsburg County Democratic Party next monthly meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 6, starting at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Williamsburg County Recreation Complex, located at 2084 Thurgood Marshall Highway, Kingstree. Meeting - Williamsburg County Education Association-Retired will hold its regular meeting 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 9, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Kingstree.

 

Homecoming - D.P. Cooper Elementary School Homecoming Parade will be held Saturday, October 6, at 10 a.m. Parade registration is free. The parade grand marshals will be Williamsburg Blakely-D.P. Cooper Alumni Association.  There will be a football jamboree at 12 p.m. at the James H. Darby, Sr. Football Field, hosted by Nate Myers. Admission is free. The games include Cades Ram vs. Kingstree Steelers at 12 p.m. (Small Fry); Cades Rams vs. Kingstree Steelers at 1:15 p.m. (Mites); Greeleyville Redskins vs. Hemingway Colts at 2:30 p.m. (Small Fry); and Greeleyville Redskins vs. Hemingway Colts at 3:45 p.m. (Mites). Yard Sale - Kingstree First Assembly of God Church, 872 Sumter Hwy., Kingstree, will have a yard sale on Saturday, October 6, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
