Traffic Safety Checkpoints - The Lane, Greeleyville, and Kingstree Police Departments will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the month of January .

Seniors Patrol - The Kingstree Police Depart-ment is offering a seniors patrol wellness check. Any elderly, ill or bedridden residents of the Town of Kingstree who would like for the police department to contact them on a regular basis should call Chief Robert Ford.  Chief Ford can be reached at 355-5435 or come by the police department and leave your name, phone number, and address.

 

Memory Dish - Hospice Care of South Caro-lina's Grief Support Group, known as the "Memory Dish" is held the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Technical Col-lege (Administrative Office Building Conference Room). The Memory Dish is conducted by Chaplain Willis Broughton. The contact number for this group is (843) 213-8507.

 

TOPS Program - Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Weight Program will meet on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. at Ina Miles Store. For more information contact Lillie Jean at (843) 355-3002 or Ann at (843) 382-9696.

 

Senior Bingo - The senior citizens of Lane invite any senior citizen to join them every first and third Tuesday at Lane Recreation Center on Broomstraw Rd. for “Senior Bingo.”

 

Weight Watchers - Weight Watchers 2012 meetings will be held at the First Baptist Church of Kingstree. Classes are on Thursdays at 5 p.m.

 

Child Screenings - Williamsburg County School District Office of Special Ser-vices, located at 500 North Academy Street, Kingstree, (843) 355-5533, will hold child find screenings each month.

 

Meeting - The Housing Authority of Kingstree will meet every third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at 1022 Lexington Ave., Kingstree.

 

Meetings - The Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments meetings will be held January 14, February 11*, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8*, August 12, September 9, October 14, November 11, and December 9*. All meetings are held in the Council’s Conference Room, 1230 Highmarket Street, Georgetown, at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to attend all meetings. Agendas for meetings are posted in the council’s office at least seven days prior to the meetings. Copies of agendas may be obtained by calling (843) 546-8502.

 

Alumni Football - Alumni football is coming to Kingstree.  Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games.  Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Teams are forming now.

 The games are set for early spring. If you are interested in putting on the pads one more time, please go to http://www.gridironalumni.com to register or call Chris at (530) 410-6396. Gridiron Alumni was founded in 2010 and has raised over $150,000 for schools and charities using alumni football games as a fundraising vehicle.

 

Parade - The Williamsburg Branch Chapter of the NAACP will be having their annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, Saturday, January 19. The parade will line-up at the Old Tomlinson High School on Lexington Ave. at 11 a.m. and will begin promptly at 1 p.m. The parade will continue on Main St. and climax at the Williamsburg County Library on Jackson St., Kingstree. The grand marshall for this prestigious occasion is our own, Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson. The organization is soliciting the support of all organizations (schools, churches, fraternities, sororities, etc.) to make this a grand success. Banquet - The Georgetown Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting its annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, January 19, at 7:06 p.m. at the Glisson Center, Bethel AME Church, Georgetown.

Featured speaker for the banquet will be Kelvin Washington, US Marshal for the District of South Carolina. Entertainment will be provided by Curtis & Co. of Columbia along with dinner. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained from the Law Office of Morant and Morant of Georgetown or any member of the Georgetown Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

 

Swamp Fox Players - The Swamp Fox Players will present Bill Oberst, Jr’s premier of Weird Tales on January 12, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. For ticket information and reservations call (843) 527-2924. The Strand theater is located at 710 Front Street in Georgetown.

 

Yard Sale - Salters Community yard will be held on Saturday, January 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wilmot McCollough Center on old Gapway Road.

 

Meeting - The regular meeting of The Waccamaw Center for Mental Health Governing Board is scheduled for Tuesday, January 15, at 7 at p.m. at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health, 501 Nelson St., Kingstree. For information please call Mrs. Gawith at (843) 347-5060, extension 226.

 

Session #1 - Williamsburg County First Steps will host session #1 of the Child Care Training and Professional Development Thursday, January 12, at 8:30 a.m. at the Williamsburg County School District Staff Development Room located 500 North Academy Street, Kingstree. Trainings will be conducted by Mrs. Jessica Flowers at the completion of this session; providers will receive 5.0 hours of DSS Credit in Growth & Development. Meeting - AARP Williamsburg County Chapter 5360 monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, January 23, at 12 p.m. at the Williamsburg County Recreation Complex, located at 2084 Thurgood Marshall Hwy., Kingstree. For more information contact Mrs. Chambers at 426-4601.

 

Meeting - The Williamsburg Section of The National Council of Negro Women, Inc.(NCNW) will meet on Friday, January 11, at 5 p.m. at the Williamsburg County Recreation on Thurgood Marshall Blvd. in Kingstree. New members are welcome.

 

Applications - Application for enrollment for Williamsburg County Magnet School of the Arts is located online at www.wcsd.k12.sc.us or you may pick up a copy from the Magnet School. Students in grades K-5 are eligible to audition for dance, visual arts, vocal ensemble, instrumental ensemble, piano, strings, drama or creative writing. 

A community meeting to discuss the application process and expectations for auditions will be held January 17, at 6 p.m. in WCMSA Cafeteria.  Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 25.  Please refer all questions concerning auditions and admission for the Magnet School to WCSD Director of Fine Arts Mrs. Jennifer Holliday at (843) 355-5571 or the Magnet School administrators at (843) 355-1506.

 

Meeting - The Georgetown Area Daylily Club is now meeting in Surfside Beach.

The club will be meeting on Sunday, January 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the Dick M. Johnson Civic Center, 829 N. Pine Dr., right behind Surfside Beach City Hall.

The Georgetown Area Daylily Club will be meeting there the second Sunday of every month, except May, June and July. This month the club will be showing a presentation on Gardening with Daylilies and the AHS Photography award winners from 2011 and 2012. Meetings are open to the public and refreshments will be served.  If you would like to join the club, dues are just $10 per year for an individual and $15 a year for a family.

Night School - The Kingstree Christian Academy will have night school for the completion of individuals high school education two nights a week at the at the school.

Meeting - The South Carolina African American Heritage Commis-sion will hold its quarterly meeting on Friday, January 11, at 11 a.m. at the South Carolina Archives and History Center, 8301 Parklane Road, Columbia. Anyone interested in the preservation of African American history and culture is invited to attend.
