School board holds special meeting

6/10/2009 by By Michaele Duke, Staff Reporter

The Williamsburg County School District Board of Trustees held a special called meeting on Friday, June 5, to discuss salaries of employees on the district organizational chart and retired teachers in executive session. The session lasted over two hours.

Once the board reconvened into open session they by-passed board input and voted to authorize the district’s attorney to enter into mediation in a pending employment matter according to the monetary limits and conditions requested by the attorney. Neither the attorney nor any board members questioned about the process would clarify the purpose of the mediation. The News is further investigating this matter.

The board also approved the hiring of several employees and authorized contract modifications to include work agreements of 2008-2009 retired teachers to continue service in the 2009-2010 school year.

The quality of the school is more closely connected to the quality of the student. It is a shame that public education isn't really dedicated to educating children. We all know it's a baby sitting service and a means of providing EEOC jobs and getting federal money. I am sorry that so many of the children in Williamsburg County and the United States are burdened with this system of public education. I am sorry if I have insulted the 50 or so qualified dedicated educators in Williamsburg County. But the fact remains that if you are trying to teach children who are growing up without a real family, to mothers who themselves didn't get beyond the 8th grade and don't value work, pray to no God and think it's more important to have the latest cell phone than to read to their child then you are fighting a loosing battle. You can do all you want, but you won't make 5% of these kids into productive citizens. The private school has provided the only hope of salvation for children. If your school board really cared about your kids they would be trying to set up some kind of voucher system that would allow parents and children the possibility of a choice. Right now you are in the no hope business. Oh yeah, I forgot - you are the people who elected these bozo's. Guess you are getting what you deserve!

This board is going to hell in a hand basket-and taking our children, teachers and staff with them. What is the agenda of the board? One of the main reasons people our not moving to our county is the school situation. It is a shame that people are paying private school tuition or sending their kids to schools out of district to get a better education. Why do we elect these fools to make decisions with our childrens' futures and our money?

My only question. Did the agenda say anything abouta legal matter being discussed the rules for executive session is as clear as water. You must indicate if its going to be a legal matter as well. It just cant turn into one with out proper notifaction.
