SAMUEL SMITH - SALTERS
Funeral services for Samuel Freeman “Sam” Smith, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Cobin, were held Friday, June 5, 2009, at St. Phillip AME Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary AME Church Cemetery. Mr. Smith died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Tidelands Community Hospice in Georgetown. He was born December 25, 1904, a son of the late Hezekiah and Vermell Smith. He received his education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. Phillip AME Church. He served the church in many capacities including the First Ladies Club Auxiliary. He received a service award for outstanding service and conduct while attending St. Phillip AME Church. He was also a member of the Farmers Aid Organization. He was a farmer and blacksmith. Survivors are: one adopted son, Herbert Hammond of the home; one brother, Oree S. Smith of Florence; and two sisters, Bernice Moorer of Summerville; and Genevieve Sneed of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
SAMUEL GIBSON - MANNING
Funeral services for Samuel “Sam” Gibson, conducted by the Rev. Cass Williams and Moderator Dr. Hermon Gibson, Jr., were held Monday, June 8, 2009, at Mt. Hermon Missionary Baptist Church in Manning. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Gibson died Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Manning on June 29, 1968, the son of the Rev. Dr. Hermon Gibson, Jr. and Lillie Mae Gibson. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church of Manning. He was a 1986 graduate of Manning High School in Manning. He furthered his education at Central Carolina, where he received an associate degree in small engine. He also attended Morris College, before enlisting in the United States Army in 1987, where he received several medals. He was employed by Federal Mogal of Summerton for several years. Thereafter, he pursued his passion as an auto mechanic. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Manning, are: his wife, Karen Renee Gibson of Manning; one son, Samuel Antron M. Gibson of Manning; one brother, Minister Hermon Mitchell Gibson (Hope) of Lake City; and five sisters, Carolyn G. White of Manning; Milissa G. Brown (John D.) of Kingstree; Rachel Gibson of Hiram, Georgia; Laura Lynette Dees of Lithonia, Georgia; and Jacqueline D. Gibson of Manning.
