MARY DUKES, LANE

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Murry Dukes, conducted by the Rev. Clifford Levine, were held Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Bethel AME Church of Lane. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at McKnight Cemetery of Lane. Mrs. Dukes died Monday, April 9, 2012. She was born November 30, 1923, in Lane, the daughter of the late Lettie Gibson Sumpter and Ervin Murry. The late Townsey and Mary “Chunky” Davis reared her. She was a member of Bethel AME Church. She was married to the late Samuel Dukes. She worked for Lanmark, Auddie Brown, Dr. David Grossman, Carlisle Trucking, and Gamble Diner. She was a domestic worker for the late Jennie and James Gamble, as well as for Sarah and Sheldon Reynolds, and her great friend Viney Faye Gamble. Three daughters, Annette, Bessie Mae and Vera Mae Dukes, and three sons, Herbert Lee, Jimmie Lee, and Daniel Lee Dukes, preceded her in death. Four sisters, Martha Dukes, Gussie Davis, Bertha Davis-Pearson, and Anna Lee D. Pearson-Darby, and three brothers, Leander and Andrew Sumpter, and Stanley Davis, preceded her in death. Survivors are: six daughters, Mrs. Bettye G. Christian (Rudolph, Sr.) of Akron, Ohio; Wilhelmenia D. Miller-Joyner (Robert) of Richmond, Virginia; Rosanna D. Gamble (Joe) and Emily L. Kieley, both of Lane; Barbara A. Dukes of Spencer, Oklahoma; and Deborah A. Fluitt-Irby of Fayetteville, North Carolina; nine sons, Timothy Dukes of Greeleyville; Moses Dukes (Cynthia) of Salters; Aaron Dukes (Dorothy) of Lane; Herbert Lee Dukes of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Leroy Dukes (Hazel) of Kingstree; Ernest Dukes, Sr. (Jannie Lou) of Wilmington, North Carolina; Heyward Dukes of Akron, Ohio; Troy Dukes (Tasha) of High Point, North Carolina; and Jimmy Dukes of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah S. Parson of Holywoods; Mrs. Louise S. Morant of Lane; and Mrs. Modlee S. Kelty (John) of St. Petersburg, Florida; three brothers, Gus Sumpter (Juanita) and Robert Lee Sumpter (Queen), both of Jacksonville, Florida; and Joseph Sumpter, Jr. (Jannie) of Gourdine;13 grandchildren she helped raise and reared as her own, Mrs. Mary Alice D. Rodgers of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Alberta D. Thompson of Lane; Beulah D. Hilton, and Clarence Dukes, both of Salters; Josephine D. McKnight of Charleston; Solomon Dukes (Robin) and Clifton Dukes, both of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Cleveland Dukes of Myrtle Beach; Randolph V. Miller (Jennifer) of Portland, Oregon; John A. Dukes of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; Karminita D. Sammers (Matthew) of Long Island, New York; and Michel Dukes, Mrs. Michele Dukes and Ernest Dukes, Jr., all of Wilmington, North Carolina; 54 grandchildren; 94 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
