JULIAN ATKINSON, KINGSTREE

Dr. Julian Hutchinson “Jake” Atkinson, 88, widower of Estelle Duke Atkinson, died Friday, February 1, 2013, in Santa Barbara, California. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery near Greeleyville.

Dr. Atkinson, recently of Florida, was born July 14, 1924, in Green County, Georgia, a son of the late Frederick William and Mary Lou Hutchinson Atkinson. He went to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana as a graduate student in February 1951, became an AgEcon Professor, and was associated with the university until his retirement.

Survivors are: two daughters, Virginia Atkinson (Charlie) of Mesa, Arizona; and Cynthia Atkinson (Brian Forrer) of Solvang, California; one son, Thomas Atkinson (Malu) of Miami, Florida; one brother, Frederick Atkinson (Dottie) of Valdosta, Georgia; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Alice Dukes, 2340 Manning Highway, Greeleyville, SC 29056 or to a charity of one’s choice.
