JOE BURGESS, KINGSTREE

Funeral services Joe Lewis Burgess, conducted by the Rev. Jack C. Washington and the Rev. Joshua Gaskins, Sr., were held Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery of Kingstree. Mr. Burgess died Friday, April 13, 2012, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. He was born September 16, 1944, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Emma Jane Redden Burgess and Wallace Burgess, Sr. He was a member of St. Mary United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the United Methodist Men. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a truck driver for many years. He was employed with Smith Paving and Grading, Burgess Trucking, Glasscock Trucking and Sherill Trucking. His most recent employment was Black River Hardwood. Five siblings, Lottie M. Greene, Clyde Burgess, Edward Burgess, Charles Burgess, and Oneal Burgess, preceded him in death. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Sara B. Burgess of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Wanda Bluefort (Eddie) of Garner, North Carolina; Terri Burgess, Mrs. Sheika Martin (Michael) and Tracey Gadson, all of Kingstree; and Tynia Thomas of Fayetteville, North Carolina; one son, Rodney Thomas (Vickie) of Kingstree; three sisters, Mrs. Ernestine Brown of Greeleyville; Mrs. Shirley McFadden of Kingstree; and Lt. Col. Cecelia Johnson of Brookville, Florida; four brothers, the Rev. Wilbur Burgess (Lula) of Andrews; Wallace Burgess, Jr. of Lake City; and Anthrum Burgess (Thomasena) and Frank Burgess (Lek), both of Kingstree; his stepmother-in-law, Mrs. Leila Daise of Lane; one granddaughter he reared in the home, Shaqwayah Burgess of Kingstree; and 10 additional grandchildren.
