Janie Gregory Polutta, 73, of Charleston, wife of Laurence Edward Polutta, died Sunday, December 30, 2012. A memorial service was held Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Essex Village church of Christ Building.
Mrs. Polutta was born March 3, 1939, in Pulaski, Virginia, the daughter of the late James Crockett Gregory and Florence Johnson Gregory. She graduated from Kingstree High School of Kingstree in 1957. She earned her Associates Degree from David Lipscomb College in 1959. She sang in a quartet in high school that sang in many settings around South Carolina, and hosted singings at her home frequently. She was a legal secretary for 40 years with Barnwell, Whaley, Patterson, and Helms, retiring in June 1998. She was a member of Essex Village church of Christ, serving the church and its members in untold ways. She served for years in the kitchen at Palmetto Bible Camp. She was a member of the James Island Senior Center, volunteered at the airport and the soup kitchen, and ran the Cooper River Bridge Run every year. Survivors are: one son, Michael Laurence Polutta (Natalie) of Atlanta, Georgia; two daughters, Melissa Polutta Altman (Ronald) of Cary, North Carolina; and Melanie Kae Polutta of Centreville, Virginia; two sisters, Margaret Catherine Sullivan of Pulaski, Virginia; and Mary Doris Akers of Charleston; and five grandchildren.
