Is it too late to stop the madness?

9/27/2012 Michaele Duke

Call me crazy but I'm really disturbed over trouble brewing around the world. Has anybody been paying attention to the global unrest that continues to expand and grow more violent with each passing day? One example is Iran who is nearing nuclear capability...in about six months or so. How will WE, the watchdog of the civilized world react when they drop the big one on Israel? Who will We be once the deed is done?

How many of us relax in our comfy recliners while 27 countries (and counting) are participating in anti-American protests? Our nation is unraveling while we continue to dump billions into countries whose governments despise us.

In case you haven't heard, The United States of America is now 7th in terms of power. That decree, albeit contestable sends a powerful message to those who would like to obliterate every "infidel" who lives in the good'ol USA.

Back home, Occupy Wall Street protesters continue to trash the cities they choose to bed down in. They have a lot of free time on their hands, don't they? Maybe if they quit smoking pot so they're straight enough to get a job they wouldn't be so upset with working people who make money.

Demonstrators are a curious lot. A few of them have a legitimate agenda but when the demo goes bad and riots ensue I'm willing to bet the ones who burn the police cars and trash the businesses weren't part of the peaceful demonstration. But that’s ok. It’s all in the name of freedom of expression.

The First Amendment is a two-sided sword. It grants one the right to freedom of expression but what happens when those "expressions" offend me? The government can prohibit some speech that may cause a breach of peace or cause violence but regulations are broad and subject to scrutiny.

Whatever, "fightin' words" don't hold a candle to what lurks across our borders. On the Texas/Mexico border a disturbing movement was recently brought to light. According to a House Committee report on Homeland Security, "Other than Mexican" persons from 35 "special interest" countries including Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Cuba, Brazil, Ecuador, China, Russia, Yemen, Albania, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan have been apprehended in the South Texas region alone since September 11, 2001.

Yes, there's some disturbing things going and the only answer I can come up with is probably too farfetched for some to comprehend. Maybe if we reverted back to the old days - when we accepted personal reasonability, respected one another and demonstrated a level of tolerance toward those who may not believe in the same things we do - the very existence of the human race wouldn't be threatened. On the other hand, if we fail to annihilate ourselves through sheer hatred, genocide, or weapons of mass destruction, we can always count the 21st of December.
