The S.C. Maritime Museum was spared major damage from the Sept. 25 fire that destroyed many other neighboring buildings in the 700 block of Front Street.
But, some minor damage has forced the museum to remain closed since the fire.
That will change next week.
Robert “Mac” McAlister, a member of the museum’s board of directors, said the popular attraction will be up and running for the Oct. 19 Wooden Boat Show on Front Street.
On Wednesday, a crew from Servpro, a fire and water restoration company, arrived to begin getting the museum ready for the big event.
The museum sustained mainly smoke and some water damage, said Servpro sales and marketing representative Martha Dozier.
“We are going through and are cleaning every square inch,” she said. “The ceilings, the walls, the windows.”
More than 200 vintage photos and six ship models were removed from the museum and will have to undergo some restoration, McAlister said.
He said a fire wall that was built in the 1930s kept the flames from spreading to the museum.
